Here’s how it works:
At the risk of over-simplifying a phenomenally complex process, what’s happening in your brain is that these snowball cycles “wear a groove” through the vast array of neurons and synapses. So, neurologically you are physically carving a path of least resistance through your brain. With enough reinforcement, you develop a reflex to certain kinds of stimuli.
Self-confidence is all about believing in yourself, your own worth, your power and abilities, regardless of the situation you are in.
People who have high self-confidence have a strong sense of assurance and belief in themselves. They exude calmness, composure and self-awareness, and that is because, they have formed a set of habits that have become part of who they are and how they live their life.
High self-confident people understand the importance of keeping their word. They understand that coming from this space of integrity, where their word is law, IS the key to accessing their own power and self-confidence, and in my opinion, is also the most important habit that leads to success in life.
One of the foremost myths about self-confidence is that people are born with self-confidence. It is a quality that cannot be acquired. Nothing can be farther from truth. Self-confidence, like other skills, can be built. All that you need is right guidance and a belief in yourself.
There are others who blame their low self-confidence to their lack of good looks and poor upbringing. They don’t realize that self-confidence has nothing to do with their looks. It is a reflection of one’s confidence. The only way they can overcome this myth is by learning to believe in themselves. In fact, talent and self-confidence are not inter-related.
Many athletes perform this very mental exercise prior to every competition they participate in. Some call it “psyching the self up”. But it’s that recalled feeling that help these competitors build the lasting self-confidence to be successful in each and every competition.
Goal setting is also important to establishing lasting self-confidence. Often we successfully accomplish a task and reap the rewarding feeling of self-confidence, only to have our self-confidence dissipate over time. This is because we didn’t set other goals after completing the previous one.
Accept yourself: You are unique in this world. It is important that you do not beat yourself up over the things that you have trouble doing. Instead of complaining about what your weaknesses, try to find ways to improve your life. Take a class at a local community college to learn a new skill. Accept yourself for who you are.
